The basic drug known as Ampicillin from the Generic category of drugs is the active
pharmaceutical ingredient used in formulating the branded antibiotic medication called Omnipen introduced by Wyeth Laboratories
Inc of the United States. The drug actually belongs to the penicillin – precisely the beta-lactam antibiotics class of drugs
which is basically used for treating various infections caused by the bacteria and viruses such as tonsillitis, pneumonia,
bronchitis, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea or infections in the intestines or food poisoning etc, to name just a few.
The chemical composition of this drug is as 7-(2-amino-2-phenyl-acetyl) amino-3,3-dimethyl-6-oxo-2-thia-5-azabicyclo
[3.2.0]heptane-4-carboxylicacid.Omnipen-Ampicillin is believed to be working by penetrating the Gram-positive bacteria,
reducing or slowing down the third and final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis which finally leads to cell lyses.
This medication is available in tablet, capsule and liquid forms and it should be taken as preferred by the individual
patient or as directed by the physician based on the medical condition of the individual patient. The common doses prescribed
are between 250mg and 500mg as determined by the doctor depending on the severity of the ailment.
Omnipen or Ampicillin or technically referred to as alpha-aminobenzylpenicillin is the semi-synthetic penicillin which is one
of the first such antibiotics developed and is similar in action to penicillin G but more effective against Gram-negative bacteria.
The drug is believed to be rather stable in the stomach acids. Usually the physicians insist on certain necessary clinical or
pathological tests and examinations on the patient before prescribing the Omnipen-Ampicillin category of medications for ensuring
the proper efficacy of the therapy.
